I've had a number of web sites over the years. At first, I hand-coded all the html, css and Javascript myself, I had a various hosting accounts and registered domain names. As web administration got more and more complex I gradually reduced the number of sites and looked for less time consuming platforms. Eventually, I settled on Blogger as the most convenient host for my wargaming stuff. But, as is the way with technology, Blogger has become more and more restrictive and intrusive and less and less convenient. Consequently, as I try to step away from big tech--including Google--I made the decision to go back to the old, simpler ways of doing things. I've always been a proponent of open source software so I am glad to be moving further and further away from proprietary solution and vendor lock-in.
The new Petite-Guerre.net uses an open source static site generating program called Bestatic. A static site suits me just fine as they are faster and less prone to malign actors hijacking the site. Bestatic also allows me to fall back on my old web skills to customize the look and feel of the site using html and css. But it also means that I lose the ability to accept comments on my blog posts. While I never had many comments, I value the ability to allow readers to leave comments if they wish (even anonymously). So looking around at the options provided by my hosting company I settle on a light-weight open source forum program. We'll see how things progress.
It took me a couple weeks to migrate all the posts from the old site but they are now here.
