revitalized romans two...

Progress has been made with the Roman Revitalization project. I decided to continue with the 'Impetus' basing style even though I'll probably end up using the figures for Midgard. Impetus bases are the same width as Midgard (120mm) but they vary in depth depending upon the troop type. Midgard bases are a uniform 60mm in depth. Though, to be honest, I'm not sure the depth of the base has a considerable effect in Midgard. I can only think of a single instance where the base depth matters--when identifying supporting bases during melee--and that can easily be house-ruled.

Here are the finished troops so far:

These are old 28mm Wargames Factory figures, including the flanking Equites cavalry (the artillery springal itself is an old RAFM model). In my head I think of each shield color as a legion and each base as a cohort--though I've only got eight cohorts in each legion. I'm not sure I want to go to 10 bases, though. Did cohorts always operate together or were they sometimes sent on detached duties? I suspect the legions never really went into battle with all 10 cohorts having detached some for guard duty, garrisons, etc.

I had previously completed eight bases for the red legion but only had six for the yellow. All the figures had plain red or yellow shields so most of the work went into giving them more highly decorated shields. Once I decided to stick to the same basing scheme I decided to fill out the yellow legion. At first I tried to keep to an equine theme for the yellow legion. However, I'm not really convinced they look 'Roman'.

With the red shields I abandoned the idea of a 'theme' figuring the color alone would be enough to identify the legion. I'm much happier with the red shields. They look more authentic to me.

After reaching this point I decided to inventory the unpainted figures and discovered that there are enough for at least another 23 bases. So... if my motivation doesn't fail me (LOOK! SQUIRREL!) I should eventually be able to field a sizable Roman army
